¿Qué es la artritis reumatoide?

La artritis reumatoide es una enfermedad crónica autoinmune que puede afectar no solo a las articulaciones causando dolor, inflamación y rigidez, sino también otros órganos del cuerpo, incluida la piel, ojos, corazón, pulmones y vasos sanguíneos.

¿Qué causa la artritis reumatoide?

La artritis reumatoide es una enfermedad autoinmune, lo que quiere decir, que se origina debido a reacciones defectuosas en el sistema inmunitario, provocando que ciertas células y/o sustancias químicas ataquen por error el tejido de las articulaciones. La inflamación que causa la artritis reumatoide se desarrolla en la “sinovial”, el tejido que recubre la articulación. Las sustancias químicas del sistema inmunitario causan que el cartílago se desgaste, disminuyendo el espacio entre las articulaciones y los huesos, causando fricción y dolor.

¿Puedo padecer artritis reumatoide, y cuáles son los factores de riesgo?

Existen factores de riesgo que pueden aumentar la probabilidad de padecer artritis reumatoide, y son:

  • Sexo: Las mujeres tienen más probabilidad de enfermar que los hombres.
  • La edad: Puede aparecer a cualquier edad, pero es más frecuente a mediados de esta.
  • Antecedentes familiares
  • Tabaquismo
  • Una dieta pobre y alergias alimentarias: Los alimentos que contribuyen a la inflamación incluyen carbohidratos refinados, alimentos fritos y demasiado azúcar.
  • Síndrome del intestino permeable
  • Obesidad: Especialmente si alguien es obeso antes de los 55 años.
  • Exposición ambiental: Debido a la exposición a toxinas, como asbestos o sílice.
  • Defensas bajas

Diagnóstico

El diagnóstico lo debe realizar un médico y puede requerir múltiples pruebas de laboratorio.

Complicaciones

Es importante no ignorar sus síntomas, incluso si van y vienen, ya que esto puede acarrear complicaciones a largo plazo, como ser:

  • Mayor riesgo de enfermedad cardíaca y accidente cerebrovascular

  • Dolores de cabeza frecuentes
  • Problemas renales y retención de líquidos.
  • Osteoporosis
  • Anemia y fatiga
  • Nódulos reumatoides: Frecuentes en los dedos o los codos.
  • Erupciones, hematomas y úlceras cerca de las uñas.
  • Síndrome de Sjögren.
